  • A Great Blue Heron sleek and showing the teardrop shape which is common to all birds as it takes off in flight over blue ocean waters at Parksville beach. Birds in flight arrange their feathers to create a aerodynamic teardrop shape, reducing friction and minimizing drag. Nature is amazing!

  • Three Brown-headed Cowbirds seemingly on the prowl. Photographed at Burnaby Lake where I observed these colourful male birds flying about in small groups that would occasionally land on the edge of the pier pausing to peer up at the sky (which may mean that they were in search of insects) but when they sing and display the beauty of their wings and tail feathers I  suspect that the behaviour might be of a more flirtatious nature.

A precious moment to photograph and to witness. I'm  hopeful that seeing seals in ocean waters so close to the city is a sign of improving environmental conditions.
